News and Notes: Injury Updates and Roster Moves and Happy Birthday, Brandon Belt

April 21, 2011
    • The Giants officially activated Cody Ross from the DL last night and optioned Brandon Belt to AAA Fresno.  Unsurprising, but still definitely met with disappointment around these parts.  We’re confident it won’t be long until we see Belt again, though.  Sometimes baseball is a waiting game, and it sounds as if Belt was far more prosaic and rational about it than we were this afternoon.
    • On that note, happy 23rd slightly belated birthday, Brandon.  We still love ya, kid, and we’ll see you soon.
    • Pablo Sandoval has sustained a right tricep injury that took him out of the lineup for the final game against the Rockies.  It apparently doesn’t bother him when batting left, so we’ll see what the lineup for Friday brings.
    • Barry Zito will be out for at least a month, per Bochy.  He’ll spend two weeks in an immobilization boot and further decisions will be made from there.  At the moment, Madison Bumgarner will start on regular rest on Friday in Zito’s spot.  Bochy’s current plan, per Baggs, is to have Bumgarner, Lincecum, and Sanchez pitch on regular rest against the Braves and slot in Vogelsong as the no. 5 starter during the road trip against the Pirates.
    • The collective Giants community’s heart stopped for a moment last night when Ty Wigginton caught Buster Posey with his backswing on a three run shot and the trainers came out to check on him.  Buster is, by all accounts, fine, but it proved in pretty clear terms just how horrified we are as a group at the thought of being Posey-less for more than a game.
    • Of less importance but much more fun, Gary Brown has asked the age old question…

More on Belt (when we’re thinking entirely rationally) and some prospects to watch later in the week.  Thanks for reading, as always. Now excuse us while we laugh hysterically at the Dodgers for a while longer.
