Series Wrap-Up: Giants Split Shortened Series with Cubs

May 15, 2011

A split series and a definite mixed bag.

Friday’s game saw a quality start from Madison Bumgarner, marred just about only by what has become his trend of one near disaster inning.  This, unfortunately, was followed by a bullpen meltdown the likes of which we haven’t seen in longer than I can remember.  The box score tells the story, so I won’t belabor the point, but you know it’s not good when you go from it being a one run game to an 11-4 blowout.  This was not the way anyone wanted to start off the road trip following a six game home stand sweep, with the possible exception of Kruk singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.

But then came Saturday and a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad meteorological day that turned out to be a pretty good day for the Giants in the ever so slightly premature end.  The rain was steady and blowing in at an angle that made me cold and wet and uncomfortable just watching and the ball was slip and sliding through the infield enough that even Miguel Tejada couldn’t be blamed for everything, but somehow Ryan Vogelsong maintained his composure and turned out to be quite the mudder.  The game was finally called after six complete innings (and a hysterical rain delay broadcast with all four of our intrepid gentlemen in the booth) with the Giants up 3-0, which meant that not only could everyone go get warm and dry, but that Vogelsong got to record his first complete game shutout.

Today’s game was postponed completely due to the weather, to be made up June 28th in a day-night double header, and Tim Lincecum will pitch tomorrow against the Rockies.

For some entertainment while we are Giants game-less, remember that the Padres and Mat Latos are playing the Rockies today in a battle of “who do Giants fans want to see lose more?”, or you can always go shopping for one of the 20 ugliest MLB licensed caps.
